-A christening attended, A best friend’s wedding, or Attending the same church- All are examples from the written words of other people that can provide details on YOUR family. Marriages, births, deaths, similar jobs, military service, memberships, education, employees, and more can provide clues to YOUR family. Paula’s talk will include ways to find these other sources along with many examples filled with names of other people.
Paula was a National Conference Co-Chair for the memorable FGS Quad Cities Conference, held 12-15 September 2001 in Davenport, Iowa, was Co-Chair for the 2011 FGS Conference held in Springfield, Illinois and the FGS 2013 Conference held in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Do you have old family letters and documents waiting to be explored?
Artificial intelligence can assist you in analyzing and researching your family’s personal archives, on paper or online. Whether you need to summarize large documents to easily identifying names and relationships, or to develop a “cast of characters” or timeline in complex documents, AI tools can make your research more efficient and effective. Get familiar with terms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and more. We will discuss how to use some of the most powerful AI tools available to genealogists today, such as transcription and translation, being mindful of accuracy and sourcing. We will also explore how the major research websites are providing new tools for us, using related technology.
Mark will explain how AI can “lighten the load” of research and help you reveal rich history deep in your family archive!

Ellis Island served as the main entry point for millions of immigrants to the United States, with its peak years between 1892 and 1924. This presentation places Ellis Island within the context of US immigration history, debunking some long-standing urban legends. It considers the documents generated as part of the immigration process, including how to find them and what information they include. Additionally, it looks at Ellis Island’s recent story, from its abandonment and partial restoration, and reflects on the conflicting yet critical immigration story in our nation’s long history.

Do you have gaps of missing information in your ancestor’s timeline?
Using archives and the records they hold can fill in those gaps. Moving beyond the basic census records and vital records to unique records and records that are not online will help you fill in those gaps in your ancestor’s timeline.
Visiting and contacting local and state archives is key in finding records about our ancestors that are not online and that can fill in the gaps in our ancestor’s timeline.

Someday the story of your life will be written. The only question is how well or badly it will be written—what sort of picture it will leave behind for friends and family members, including those not yet born. I’ve written Yours Truly for anyone who wants that story to be fair, accurate, interesting and maybe even inspiring. My book explains how to make sure your story is told the way you want—and how thinking about and preparing your story can help you live a better life. My advice: Tell your own story. Don’t leave it to friends or family, who almost certainly will make a hash of it. Yours Truly also guides you in writing the life story of a loved one who is unwilling or unable to take on that project. Named by the Washington Post as one of 10 noteworthy books published in December 2022.

One of the biggest challenges we face when writing family histories is how to turn the bare facts into tales worthy of being read, but our ancestors were real people, not just names, dates and places. We’ll explore four different approaches that can help us to understand them in the context of the time and place in which they lived, and to look for unexpected clues in the information we’ve already gathered. By digging deeply into the genealogical details, we can bring our ancestors’ stories to life.
Pam Vestal is a professional genealogist and national speaker who turned her focus to her longtime love of genealogy after a 20-year writing career. Her articles have appeared in the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly and the National Genealogical Society Magazine, and her lectures take her from coast to coast. Pam specializes in conducting genealogical research and then transforming that information into illustrated stories that even non-genealogists can enjoy.

Do you have ancestors who were enslavers or who were enslaved? Many of us have some connection to slavery, whether we realize it or not. This presentation will explain how and why a descendant of enslavers decided to embark on a major research project to trace the people his ancestors enslaved and their ancestors and to connect with their living descendants. The other part of the presentation will include specific examples of research from that project entitled, “Enslaved at Oakley & Beyond.” The presentation has two main goals: to impart a better understanding of sources, research methods, and tools used when researching enslaved people and enslavers; and to encourage others to have conversations within their own families and perhaps embark on a research project of their own.

Because of the last dates, handwriting, and known facts, I believe Ida Powell Dulany wrote those two pages of names c. 1860.

Land records, including warrants, surveys, patents, deeds and mortgages, are essential genealogical, original records that most often provide participants’ information and answer questions of identity, relationship, event, or situation, as required by the Genealogical Proof Standard. These records often answer questions not answered by any other documents. And yet, land records are the least understood and pursued records in the field of family history. This presentation aims to provide both the real estate background and research specifics to lead you to the land records that may solve your brick walls.

Event Details
Whether you are a casual family history hobbyist or on the professional genealogy track, everyone needs to know how to provide solid genealogical proof. How you support your family research findings is the difference between genealogy and mythology. We will demystify the Genealogy Proof Standard and discuss its five components. You will learn how to put together evidence to provide a soundly reasoned, coherently written conclusion. We will explore the different types of written conclusions and how the complexity of the genealogy research dictates which type of written conclusion is necessary for true genealogical proof. Lastly, we will look at several case studies to see how to build genealogy proof statements, proof summaries, and proof arguments. Make sure you know what to do to guarantee your genealogy research findings will be taken seriously for generations to come.
Sydney F. Cruice Dixon is a professional genealogy researcher, writer and national lecturer. Alex Haley’s (alexhaley.com) Roots book and TV miniseries in 1976/1977 ushered in an era of family history research that illustrated that it was possible for African Americans to trace their
heritage back prior to 1870. During this year’s Black History Month, Dean Henry will recap not only the “typical” African American genealogy research process using examples / illustrations ,
including some from his own family research, but will also dispel some myths about this research specialty. Some relevant newer developments in online websites and consumer genetic testing are also highlighted.
Dean Henry began focusing on his family’s genealogy in the late 1980’s. Since retiring from a career in Information Technology in 2013, he has consulted as a professional genealogist and cybersecurity leader. He established Family Pearl LLC (familypearl.com) with specialities focusing African American Genealogy, and Genealogy Technology. Pin down your elusive immigrant ancestor’s place of origin using some well-known – and lesser-known –
record sets, ideas, and techniques.
Immigrant ancestors can give us quite the challenge when trying to find their exact place of origin. The endless “Ireland” notations or “Italy” listed as place of birth can drive genealogists, both beginner and expert alike, mad. This presentation delves into various and diverse records that are found stateside so as to narrow down that search, as well as ideas for when the paper trail continually runs cold. The main suspects will be discussed, as will numerous lesser-known and lesser-used records. A (non-exhaustive) sample of some of the record sets covered:
• Ship manifests
• Naturalization records
• Vital records
• World War I/World War II draft registration cards
• Church records
• County histories
• Probate files
• Ethnic record sets

This year, we will use a workshop format involving all attendees. Come prepared with information about your “brick wall” and be prepared to share your genealogical knowledge with others. Attendees will be divided into small groups facilitated by a planning committee member. Each group will select one or more group member’s questions and refine them using a structured approach, covering, for example:
- Defining the genealogical question
- Crafting a research plan
- Identifying potential sources of importance
This is a chance for you to actively participate in a real genealogical exercise while helping yourself and others at the same time. At the end, each group will report back to the rest of the attendees on their question and approach.
Mike and Cheryl are members of the MLGC Planning Committee and led the effort to create our club website: www.mainlinegenealogy.org. They also maintain and update the website.
Michael Kearney, PhD, is currently a volunteer at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and a member of the planning committee of the Main Line Genealogical Society. He took up these duties following a 44
year career managing large-scale information system projects at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been an active genealogical researcher for more than 25 years and has had work published in the New
England Historical and Genealogical Register and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. His latest work, The Annotated World War I Diaries of Captain George F. Kearney, is now available on Amazon Books. He will be discussing his most recent effort: The Ganges Families History Project (thegangesfamiliesproject.com )
Cheryl Bittner, MBA, has participated in MLGC since retiring in 2005 from a career in information systems program management in the aerospace and pharmaceutical industries. Cheryl credits her interest in family history and genealogy to her great grandmother who started an annual family reunion which has continued for over 100 years. Each reunion starts with a service at a church built on land donated by Cheryl’s ancestors in early 1800’s from their farm, the farm where Cheryl’s paternal grandfather was born and raised.

Which is not to suggest, as is too often done, that historical truth is never to be attained, in any of its aspects. With this kind of truth, as with all others, the problem is the same: one errs more or less. (Marguerite Yourcenar, Memoirs of Hadrian).
In July 1800, the USS Ganges, patrolling off the coast of Cuba, seized two American slaving vessels and sent them to Philadelphia as prizes. There, the enslaved Africans aboard were freed by the U.S. District Court, given the surname Ganges and indentured out to masters and mistresses in the Philadelphia area. This incident poses a host of questions, both historical and genealogical (although these are really just two aspects of the same thing):
- What happened to the Ganges?
- Who was responsible for their enslavement and rescue, and what happened to them?
Answering these questions had required research in a broad variety of records well beyond the usual census, vital and probate records (although these are useful, too): court records, military records, legal records across multiple repositories on three continents. The talk will highlight some of the most interesting questions answered to-date in what has become a multi-year research effort.
Michael Kearney, PhD, is currently a volunteer at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and a member of the planning committee of the Main Line Genealogical Society. He took up these duties following a 44 year career managing large-scale information system projects at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been an active genealogical researcher for more than 25 years and has had work published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. His latest work, The Annotated World War I Diaries of Captain George F. Kearney, is now available on Amazon Books. He will be discussing his most recent effort: The Ganges Families History Project ( thegangesfamilies.com )

How do you provide genealogical proof when no singular document contains the evidence? Using a case study, Sydney will show how it is necessary to break down an historical event into the who, the when, and the where. Therefore the result is building a three-proof argument.
Sydney F. Cruice Dixon is a professional genealogist, writer and lecturer practicing in the Mid-Atlantic Region. She holds an MBA from Drexel University and a BA from Penn State University. She is the current resident of the Association of Professional Genealogists for the Greater Philadelphia Area Chapter, and she serves on the Genealogy Advisory Committee for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Also, at the Historical Society, she developed the curriculum and teaches the Foundations of Genealogy courses and she is a member of their faculty for the Researching Family in Pennsylvania Institute. In the spring of 2017 she cofounded the Greater Philadelphia Genealogy Consortium – an organization that encourages the growth and cooperation between genealogy and historical organizations in the greater Philadelphia area (currently 33 member organizations). Just this October, the National Genealogical Society featured Sydney’s article, A Family Secret: Desertion, Scurvy, and President Lincoln as the cover story for NGS Magazine. Also, she has
appeared on our local NBC-10 news television station with Randy Gyllenhaal discussing at home DNA testing kits.

Have you ever thought you might have Quaker ancestors? Have you ever been told you have Quaker ancestors? Have you tried finding your Quaker relatives, but gotten stumped by Quaker jargon? Come hear a discussion of Quaker archives, particularly in the Philadelphia area, to learn about how to use these resources. Mary will also discuss the over 8 million Quaker documents in Ancestry.com and how best to use those resources.
Mary works with researchers of all kinds, including students, faculty, genealogists, and other academics. She fosters relationships with donors who donate materials to the collections, and she works directly with the materials in the collection in order to make it more accessible. One of her favorite parts of her job is working with classes to show the amazing collections Haverford holds to another generation of researchers!
In her free time she likes to hike in the Wissahickon with her friends, take pictures of and drink coffee, and find ways to fight white supremacy, transphobia, and patriarchy.

In this program we will look at where our ancestors lives intersected with the government and the records that were created from those interactions. We will discuss where to look for your ancestor’s government records, and how important it can be to understand the laws that were in place at the time your ancestor created those records. We will discuss the different types of legal systems and how that can play a major roll in where and how to look for family documents.
Note: this being our first attempt at an online meeting, invitations will be limited to the people on our current email list. You can request to be added to the list by providing your name and email address via the “Contact Us” link, above. We will send instructions on connecting to the meeting on or after April 8th.

Trying to stay organized while researching can be a struggle. Sara explains how placing information into a chart or timeline can better organize your research. Sorting information into a chart, can also help clarify what further research steps are necessary, if needed. Placing information into a timeline can visually show what years or locations are necessary to be researched. By organizing facts into a chart or timeline, the determination can be made if your research has provided enough documentation to answer your genealogical question.
Sara Butson is a researching genealogist who has always had a passion for genealogy. She found her love for it through heirloom photos, family lore, and tradition. Sara is in the process of completing ProGen 43. She is the current Treasurer of the Greater Philadelphia Area Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is a member of various local and national genealogical organizations.

Find-A-Grave can help you discover where your ancestor is buried. Connect your family using this website and other resources found online! This presentation will show how to connect family members by effectively using the Find-A-Grave website in conjunction with resources in the Historical Record Collection and Family Tree on FamilySearch as well as resources on Ancestry.com and published tombstone transcriptions kept by local genealogical societies. We’ll follow how a German Revolutionary War veteran’s family was connected by using these resources. Creating a memorial for someone not in the database will be discussed as well as how to create a memorial when the cemetery is unknown. Linking family members, requesting tombstone photos, and submitting corrections to memorials will also be covered. Learning how to use Find-A-Grave effectively can be crucial in researching your family.
Dana Palmer has been a genealogy instructor at Sinclair Community College since 2010. She became a certified genealogist (CG) in 2009, and a certified genealogical lecturer (CGL) in 2019. She has been a speaker at national, state, and local genealogy events and conferences including RootsTech (2020), NGS (2020, 2018); and FGS (2020, 2013). Her research focuses in the Midwest, specifically Ohio, but she has researched in many locations across the United States and in Germany, the U.K., and Denmark.
She has extensive knowledge of publishing family history books and editing digital photographs, and has published over 30 books for her genealogical society, clients and family.
She is currently a member in several lineage societies including I.S.D.U.P., N.S.D.A.R and U.S.D. 1812 and recently submitted an application to Colonial Dames for her ancestors and to the Mayflower Society, SAR, and others for her clients.
She served as one of the OGS Conference Co-Chairs in 2013 and again 2016 and has planned the annual Family History Jamboree in Centerville, Ohio since 2016. She has received numerous awards including: 2016 OGS Key Player; OGS outstanding chapter officer in 2012; the Tecumseh Book Award in 2010 and again in 2016; and the Salmon P. Chase Book Award in 2008 for a book she co-authored. The WCGS website she created in 2001 won best website five times of the six times she applied at the OGS annual conference (2007-2009, 2011-2012). While she was President, her chapter, the Warren County Genealogical Society, won best chapter at the OGS conference five times of the six times she applied (2007-2009, and 2011-2012).
She currently serves as Vice-President of the Martin Heiner Family Organization. She also is their research coordinator and one of their webmasters.
She loves solving problems and tracking down those elusive ancestors. If she is not busy writing books for her clients, you can probably find spending time with her husband and children.

John Grenham was Project Manager with the Irish Genealogical Project from 1991 to 1995 and later went on to develop and market his own genealogical software, ‘Grenham’s Irish Recordfinder’. In 2005, he was the first Genealogist-in-Residence at Dublin City Library. He was awarded a fellowship of The Irish Genealogical Research Society in 2007 and of the Genealogical Society of Ireland in 2010.
John is the author of Tracing your Irish Ancestors (5th ed. Dublin, Baltimore MD, 2019) the standard reference guide for Irish genealogy, The Atlantic Coast of Ireland (2014), Clans and Families of Ireland (1995), and An Illustrated History of Ireland (1997), among other works. He wrote the “Irish Roots” column in The Irish Times from 2009 to 2016, develops heritage databases, and ran the Irish Ancestors website in conjunction with The Irish Times until 2016. He now runs the successor website at www.johngrenham.com .

We first met “Cousin Russ” Worthington at our Family Tree Maker presentation in June. We were so impressed with his knowledge of both genealogical research and the Family Tree Maker(FTM) software, we asked him to join us in October. The program will give you a solid foundation in the use of FTM and help you begin to take full advantage of what it has to offer:
1. Why is it is good to have your tree on your own software?
2. What are the top software packages currently available?
3. Why choose FTM? Brief history of FTM, relationship with Ancestry and current structure.
4. What are the basic capabilities within FTM?
5. What are the features that make it stand apart?
6. How do I get FTM?
7. How do I install FTM?
8. How do I get started?
9. Educational resources…
Our Speaker:
Russ Worthington has become known at “Cousin Russ” and is indeed a real cousin of “Dear Myrtle”, Pat Richley-Erickson. He says of himself: “Most folks know me to be a Family Tree Maker expert, a bit overstated, but an avid user. I am serious about locating and using “original documents” as a family history researcher, a student of genealogical methodology, a Find-A-Grave volunteer, a public speaker and a user of technology in my research. I served in the US Coast Guard in Vietnam. I first met ‘DearMYRTLE’ listening to her old podcasts while I commuted to and from work, but we didn’t meet until years later. She was demonstrating a genealogy software program and I piped up that I had the same early Welsh Quakers in Philadelphia and Chester County, Pennsylvania. It is my honor to work with DearMYRTLE with the production the DearMYRTLE online education programs.”
